Overview of the event

The presentation discusses the effectiveness of carbon pricing tools, including carbon taxes, the emission trading scheme and carbon crediting mechanisms in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These tools are gaining popularity globally and are considered part of policy packages by most of the countries that have signed the Paris Agreement. Several countries have implemented multiple pricing instruments over the past few decades.

At the session, the author discussed the effectiveness of different carbon pricing tools and highlighted the countries that have implemented carbon taxes, emissions trading systems, input subsidy systems, and subsidies for clean energy sources. The data stateshow that direct carbon pricing tools are only applicable in developed economies while input subsidies for clean energy sources are common in most countries.

The presentation also provides an overview of existing carbon pricing trends and mechanisms, including the implementation of carbon taxes and emissions trading systems at the national and local levels, as well as trends in carbon pricing instruments and fossil fuel-supporting reforms. The author concluded that while carbon pricing is an important tool for achieving climate goals, more empirical research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of this tool.

The presentation by Dr. Govinda R. Timilsina attracted interest and received comments from lecturers and fellows attending to improve their research work. With the spirit of active academic exchange, the CELG seminar was successfully held.
